Your Holidays in Style

The holiday season is upon us and no doubt, there are parties galore for which we must be prepared. Quick. What is the one thing that will take you from office meeting to office party in style? It’s the one thing that no woman of style can go without. Give up? It’s your LITTLE BLACK DRESS.

What makes this one item so wonderful? Nothing else you wear goes on as easily, slims you as quickly and allows YOU to be the center of attention (rather that what you are wearing).  Nothing else is “instant sophistication”. Think of your LITTLE BLACK DRESS as a canvas. You paint the picture of style with your choice of hairstyle, makeup, shoes and accessories.

When you slip into your dress, notice how it feels and fits. Choose one that celebrates your assets and makes you feel like a million bucks. Do you need to hide full hips? Choose a dress with a fuller, A-line skirt. Do you want to appear taller? Go strapless. Do you need curves? Choose a dress that flows with soft layers of chiffon. Find YOUR perfect dress and wear it with confidence. I know you’ll look great!

Enjoy your holidays in style,

Cheryl

$hop Talk: The When & What to Buy

November is a great month for dresses and shoes while December is great for dresses and coats. During this season, resort wear is prominent in stores as people prepare to travel to warmer climates during these colder months.

It may be a bit more difficult to shop for “Core Wardrobe” items at this time with all of the holiday gift items lining the stores shelves, but be ready to take advantage of great sales on December 26th!

Ask Cheryl...

Q. Hey Cheryl,

I really enjoy your newsletter. Here is my dilemma. I don't have a real dress code at my job, but I need to look professional.  I also need to be comfortable because I spend a good part of some days standing. So how do I stock my wardrobe?  Shoes are a big problem - I love heels, but they are often not comfortable, and many flats are either too casual or dowdy-looking.  What to do?

A. Dear Kim,

It's great that you don't have a formal dress code at work, but you are right when you say that you still need to look professional. You want your wardrobe to say that you are competent and qualified, while showing a flare for style.

Some basic things that work for a casual wardrobe are:

  • Denim Jacket

  • Leather Jacket

  • Black Pants

  • Denim pants (not necessarily jeans)

  • Ribbed Turtleneck Sweaters

  • Short skirts (tweed skirts look great with denim jackets)

  • White woven shirts (button down shirts with collar)

  • White t-shirt (for layering)

  • Black and white striped t-shirt (cannot live without it. It ties so many things together!!) Be sure to add some fun textured/patterned tights as well.

As for shoes, one of my favorite places is Ann Taylor. They have flats that are not overly-casual or dowdy. You can find them in textured leathers (like croc) or with unique whipstitch patterns around the toe.

Before heading out to shop, shop, shop, take a look at what you own and wear most often. Then plan to invest your money in styles that will complete the most outfits.  If you are really "revamping" your shoe collection, look for

  • Boots

  • Flats that work with jeans/khakis

  • Flats or moderate heel that can work with skirts.

Pay attention to the looks that catch your eye in a magazine or catalog and use those pictures as a "blueprint" for your personal style. I know this is a long answer but I hope it helped. Good luck!

Second, you may want to look for pants that are cut fuller in the thigh and leg. This may allow you do wear one size smaller than you typically do, which will give you the fit you need in the waist without sacrificing the needed room in the hips and thighs.
